Preserving Rural Heritage

Little sheep, big potential

Shetland sheep are a heritage breed of sheep originally from the Shetland Islands in Scotland. This hardy little breed is an excellent choice for conservation grazing: they thrive on less-than-prime forage, will happily consume a wide range of plants—including common weeds & brush—and their small size and docile nature mean they can graze around sensitive equipment without risk of damage.

The Shetland sheep’s true superpower is their ability to turn unwieldy vegetation into top-quality fiber and gourmet meat. Wool is the original performance fiber, and Shetland wool is among the softest of any breed! Shetland wool is also versatile—finding traditional uses as wide-ranging as delicate, lacy wedding shawls to outerwear warm and resilient enough to keep fishermen warm at sea.

Grazing these sheep brings generations-old agricultural tradition into the 21st century and beyond. Sometimes, the question isn’t choosing between tradition and progress—it’s how to merge the two in ways that unlock a better world for all.
